Seven facts about Reading

Reading is the largest town in England. Of course there are larger cities, but Reading has not been granted city status despite being larger than many cities.

Enjoy listening to music at Reading Festival , one of the largest and most famous music festivals in the UK. It plays host to top bands from the UK and the world. Previous bands that have played are Nirvana, Guns n Roses, Metallica, The Killers, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Blur and Eminem to name but a few. The festival is usually held in August.

Author Jane Austen studied at the Abbey school in Reading. Jane wrote Pride and Prejudice and other classics such as Emma.

DiCaprio’s co-star Kate Winslett in the block buster Titanic was born and raised in Reading. Her family still lives here.

In the ruins Reading Abbey, the remains of Henry I lie. Henry was King of England from 1100 to 1135.

Not as long as the Nile (4132 miles), the River Thames flows through Reading on its way to London. At 215 miles it is the UK’s second longest river.

Go and watch a premier league football match at Reading’s Madjeski stadium, named after Sir John Madjeski, the chairman of Reading F.C. and Chancellor of the University of Reading.
